A Family History Of Melodrama started out as just a phrase that came to me. I thought it was funny, and definitely needed to be a painting. When I sat down to tackle it, I wanted to paint something entirely from my imagination. No photos were used for reference. I really wanted to make something loose & folk art-y. Realism is tedious. Reality is tedious, too.
When I was almost finished with it, my daughter asked: “Is that our family?”
“No, of course not! There’s only 3 of us.”
She pointed to the little Boston Terrier. “That’s Josie.” Josie’s our dog, and actually does resemble a sullen teenager.
So is this our family? Not really. But sort of.
Also: I made a few time lapse videos of the making of this one! Here’s the very last little bit:
I’m not sure if anyone is going to like this painting. It feels a little weird putting it up for sale, honestly. But it also feels like something I have to do, so here we go.
